On November 12, 2019, Mikhail Kotyukov, Minister of Science and Higher Education of Russia, speaking at the meeting of Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, with members of the Government, addressed the issue of enhancing the international competitiveness of the Russian higher education and science. The top 500 most authoritative world rankings: the Academic Ranking of World Universities, the QS World University Ranking and the Times Higher Education World University Ranking now include 28 Russian universities. In 2012, there were only seven universities from Russia. Currently, 15 leading Russian universities are among the top 500 universities in the world; 19 universities are included in the top 200 in the subject rankings and 11 universities are among 100 best universities in the world.

“We should not stop halfway enjoying the results achieved. Today, many countries are competing for the best brains and the best technological solutions. Therefore, the work on increasing the competitiveness of the Russian higher education and science should certainly continue. We have been pursuing a clear and ambitious goal: by 2024, Russia should be among top ten countries, which are the most competitive in education and science,” Minister Mikhail Kotyukov is quoted as saying.

“Russia should be among the top five countries of the world conducting research and development in areas identified as priorities in science and technology. It is also extremely important to double the number of international students studying in Russia and set up at least 15 world-class research and education centers”, Minister Mikhail Kotyukov added.
