From Nov. 30-Dec. 5, Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University hosted the All-Russian Physicists’ Tournament. The event was supported by the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, the governor of the Arkhangelsk region, and Russian software company ABBYY.

The absolute winners of the competition are team Rubicon from Voronezh, one point ahead of the MIPT team Experience. Both teams got first-place certificates.

A team from South Ural State University placed second. A total of seven teams from the Russian cities of Moscow, Voronezh, Chelyabinsk, Penza, and Arkhangelsk competed in the tournament.

The competition is akin to a physics “skirmish” where teams are pitted against one another to solve problems, present solutions, and defend them in front of opponents and the jury. The tasks are known in advance and constitute tough research problems for which no complete solutions are available in the literature. The winning team gets to participate in the 2019 International Physicists’ Tournament, to be held in April in Lausanne, Switzerland.
