Russian students won gold at the IMC-2025 international mathematical olympiad

The team from Saint Petersburg State University took first place at the 32nd International Mathematics Competition IMC-2025, held in the Bulgarian city of Blagoevgrad. Over 430 students, representing more than 50 leading universities from around the world, participated in the intellectual competition.

The students demonstrated a high level of knowledge, scoring 355 points and confidently winning gold at one of the most prestigious mathematics competitions. This victory not only was the best result among all participants, but also significantly improved last year's performance by 30 points.

SPbU students outperformed strong competitors from Poland, Switzerland, Belarus, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Hungary, and other countries, as well as surpassed their compatriots from MIPT and Novosibirsk State University, who made it to the top 15 teams of the olympiad.

This triumph marks the sixth victory for the SPbU team at the International Mathematics Olympiad, confirming the University's leading positions in the global mathematics education rankings. Previously, students climbed to the top of the podium in team standings in 2015, 2018, 2021, 2023, and 2024.

"The consistently high results of the team attract talented applicants to all levels of education: from bachelor's to postgraduate. For ambitious individuals, the desire to study in the company of the best is natural. Many colleagues who came to SPbU from other leading scientific centers also note that the desire to work with strong students has become one of the main reasons for their choice," shared the group leader, Professor Fyodor Petrov. The professor added that, although the results of the olympiads are not the only criterion for the development of mathematics at Saint Petersburg State University, they draw attention to the scientific achievements of SPbU and stimulate further growth. Despite current successes, the team acknowledges the need for continuous work and development to maintain the achieved level.

The International Mathematical Olympiad is a unique platform where math students can not only showcase their knowledge, but also establish valuable professional connections, exchange experiences with colleagues from different countries, and make new acquaintances. The wide range of mathematical disciplines makes the intellectual competition significant for talented students striving for a deep understanding of the subject and the development of their professional potential: tasks cover algebra, analysis (real and complex), geometry, and combinatorics, offering participants the opportunity to excel in a variety of areas.
