Moscow Polytech: New Promising Aluminum Alloys for Energy and Industry

Scientists of Moscow Polytechnic University, under the guidance of Torgom Akopyan, Doctor of Engineering Sciences and a promising Russian scientist, have developed innovative alloys based on the Al-Ca system with additions of copper, silicon and iron. These materials exhibit high strength, wear resistance and are well-suited for modern production technologies such as casting, rolling, and laser processing.

Torgom Akopyan was awarded the Pyotr Kapitsa Research Grant  (established in honor of the renowned Soviet physicist)  after winning a competitive selection at Moscow Polytech as part of the Priority 2030 program.

The results of the three-year grant-funded study were presented in August 2025.

— The alloys have successfully passed all strength and pressure treatment tests, demonstrating an optimal balance of mechanical and technological properties.

— The new materials are promising for storage and transportation of liquid hydrogen, as well as for use in gas liquefaction equipment — key components of green energy solutions.

— Laser processing improves the structure of the alloys, opening up possibilities for 3D printing of metal components.

The project has been supported by grants and recognized in leading scientific journals, confirming the practical value of these developments.
