UrFU Improves Its Positions in Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects
Ural Federal University has improved its position in the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2026.
UrFU rose by 42 positions in materials science and entered the 151-200 group, becoming the first among Russian universities. The university has strengthened its leadership in the energy sector, remaining in the 201-300 group. In metallurgy, UrFU retained its place in the top 200 and 2nd place in the country, and in mathematics – positions in the 201-300 group and 3rd place in Russia.
According to Vladimir Kruzhaev, First Deputy Vice-Rector of UrFU for Science, the growth in the ranking is due to the active development of scientific research and the expansion of international cooperation.
"The high positions in the Shanghai Subject Ranking are the result of the active work of our scientists in the university's priority scientific and technological fields. Our achievements in materials science, mathematics, energy and metallurgy reflect the directions of the university's strategic development and meet the challenges of the country's technological leadership. We are proud that we are not only maintaining, but also strengthening our positions in key areas for UrFU, becoming the first among Russian universities," notes Vladimir Kruzhaev.

The Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects is considered one of the most objective and comprehensive studies in the field of university ranking in the world. In it, specific places are assigned to the first hundred universities, then the ranking is divided into groups, within which the ranking goes alphabetically. The ranking evaluates universities in 57 subject areas. In total, 14 Russian universities entered the list in 2026.

Registration for the Open Doors international intellectual competition for international students and young researchers begins on August 20, 2026. Winners and runners-up will have the opportunity to study tuition-free at leading Russian universities within the quota of the Government of the Russian Federation and may also receive additional government grant support.

FEFU and Malaysia's largest university have agreed to establish a joint artificial intelligence laboratory
The center will be located on the UiTM campus in Shah Alam (Selangor state). The Malaysian side will provide the facilities and appoint the center’s director, while FEFU will appoint a co-director to coordinate the joint work on the Russian side. The Institute of Big Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence will serve as the lead scientific partner on the Malaysian side.
