Researcher at one of UrFU labs became the one of the top ten young economists in the world
Researcher at the UrFU Laboratory of International and Regional Economics (established with the support of the Priority 2030 program) Monirul Islam was ranked among the top ten young economists in the world by RePEc. The scientist ranks ninth in the top-100 ranking, which takes into account the publication activity (number of publications, journal level, citation and other scientometric indicators) of researchers in the field of economics around the world. In total, the ranking takes into account the work of 3,335 economists, whose first article on economics was published in a scientific journal no earlier than five years ago.
“It is an immense pleasure and honor for me to occupy an honorable position in this ranking. This is a recognition of my dedication to economics, and I am full of gratitude to my research supervisor Kazi Sohag and the head of the Department of Economics Oleg Mariev who played an important role in this success. I am sincerely grateful to my co-authors and colleagues in the laboratory for the opportunity to work with such outstanding people and hope to make further contributions to economic research,” said Monirul Islam.
Monirul Islam is engaged in modeling and actively publishes in leading international scientific publications. Using economic models, he determines the impact of the global energy transition and geopolitical risks on international trade in mineral resources. The economist's recent research includes the relationship between Russian exports of mineral raw materials and renewable energy production, taking into account geopolitical risks, mining in conditions of uncertainty, the relationship between Russian uranium exports and nuclear energy consumption in the United States, and other topics.
Dr. Kazi Sohag, the scientific supervisor of the Monirul Islam, became the first UrFU researcher to be included in such a ranking. In 2023, he was one of the hundred best economists in the world who started their scientific careers in the last 10 years.
“Monirul Islam is the second researcher of the institute to be included in such a ranking, and he has almost two more years to further progress in it. This means that he is a real contender for higher positions,” said Dmitry Gladyrev, Head of the Center for Research Support.
