Windows of Memory event organised by international and Russian students on Victory Day

The Windows of Memory event was held at the Lobachevsky University campus on Victory Day, May 9. At 21:00, the windows on the facade of one of the UNN buildings highlighted the number 80 in honour of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. The action was organised by more than 70 international and Russian student activists.

Kerim Klychev from Turkmenistan, a 3rd year student of the UNN Institute of Clinical Medicine, noted that for him participation in the Windows of Memory action is a unique opportunity to once again say a big thank you to relatives and loved ones - to all those who did not return from that terrible and bloody war.

"My great-grandmother participated in the Great Patriotic War, and I know from my grandmother's stories what our people had to go through, what they endured. On this day, May 9, we remember all those who did not return from the battlefield. You know, I want to remember them today not with sadness, but with gratitude for the feat they accomplished," the young man shared.

"The Day of Victory in the Great Patriotic War is a very important and significant holiday both for Russians and for the world as a whole. Today, we not only celebrate the victory over Nazi Germany, which was won by the Soviet Union, but we also appreciate the enormous sacrifice at the cost of which this victory was won by the Soviet people and their allies. If the Soviet people had not stopped Nazism at that time, our world would be a very different place now. For me, participating in the Windows of Memory event is another opportunity to say thank you to all those who defended peace on our planet at the cost of their lives," said Andrew Uchechukwu Oparaugo, a 4th year student from Nigeria studying at the UNN Institute of Clinical Medicine.

The event was initiated by the International Students Support Office of Lobachevsky University.  It was held as part of the “I Care - I Can” programme of social initiatives of UNN international students.

"Of course, as part of not only the university community of students, but also as representatives of the international community,  we cannot remain on the sidelines. Our action united everyone who cares about the memory of the heroes who defended and liberated not only their homeland, but also the countries occupied by Nazis. It united everyone who cherishes the memory and history of their ancestors, everyone who respects the history and traditions of our country," said Dmitry Medvedev, Head of the International Students Support Office.
