UTMN strengthens ties with South Africa University

Last year, the staff of the Preparatory Department for International Students at Tyumen State University successfully completed a project commissioned by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation on the topic “Methodological Support for the Introduction of Russian as a Foreign Language into the Curriculum.”

To address the project’s objectives, cultural, educational, and training programs were developed for students with a basic knowledge of Russian, as well as a teaching and learning package consisting of a textbook, a workbook, and an interactive online course on the Stepik platform. Since the project’s goal was fully achieved and Russian has been incorporated into the University of South Africa’s curriculum in the form of short language courses, the Ministry has extended the project through 2026.

In 2026, the project’s stated goal is to provide informational and methodological support for Russian language courses, which entails deepening ties with the University of South Africa and expanding the number of participants involved in the project’s activities. To build on the results achieved last year, this year’s plan includes conducting courses over two semesters across two modules—zero-level and beginner—with the duration of each Russian language course increased from 36 to 120 hours, and the number of events aimed at promoting Russian language and culture increased from 20 to 40. The change in the scope and language level of the programs required the development of a new program of educational activities for students with zero-level Russian proficiency, as well as a new program aimed at promoting the Russian language and culture. To fully equip instructors, the staff of the preparatory department developed a new teaching and methodological package for zero-level students.

In addition, during negotiations with the host institution, an agreement was reached to establish a Russian Language and Culture Center, where staff from Tyumen State University will be able to create an authentic atmosphere and provide in-person and virtual consultations on all relevant topics. This will not only enable the implementation of the planned academic and extracurricular workload but will also help strengthen the position of the Russian language in the University of South Africa’s curriculum.
