About the City
Kazan is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, where European and Eastern cultures have coexisted for centuries. Kazan blends ancient traditions with the energy of a diverse student population and stands as one of Russia's leading centres of religion, science, and sport. Its multicultural character and openness have made it one of the country's most recognisable cities.
History
A settlement emerged on the site of present-day Kazan around 1005, at the crossroads of major trade routes. By the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, it had grown into a major commercial and political centre of the Golden Horde, and in 1438 it became the capital of the independent Kazan Khanate, founded by Khan Ulugh Muhammad.
Kazan became part of the Russian state in 1552, after which the tsar ordered the construction of the white-stone Kazan Kremlin, bringing in master builders from Pskov to carry out the work. Today, the Kremlin remains the city's principal symbol and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Geographic Location
Kazan lies on the left bank of the Volga, where the smaller Kazanka River flows into it from the north-east, approximately 715 km east of Moscow; the Kazanka runs westward through the city centre, loosely dividing Kazan into two parts. The city stands on largely flat terrain.
Kazan is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan and one of the largest centres of the Volga Federal District.
Landmarks and Attractions
The Kazan Kremlin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the heart of the city. Its skyline is dominated by the Kul Sharif Mosque, whose turquoise minarets rise to almost 58 metres, and by the historic Annunciation Cathedral, the oldest stone church in the Volga region.
Known as "Kazan's Arbat", pedestrianised Bauman Street stretches from the Kremlin's walls through the city centre, its cafés and street performers giving it a lively, festive air. Nearby, the Kremlin Embankment offers views over the Kazanka River.
Beyond the city, Sviyazhsk is an island fortress town 30 km from Kazan that hosts music festivals, theatrical performances, and archery tournaments. The Blue Lakes, ranging from 2 to 18 metres in depth, never freeze in winter and are prized for their clear water and therapeutic mud.
