About the City
Vladivostok is a city with a unique history that has grown from a port into a major political, economic, and cultural centre of the Russian Far East. It is where Eastern and Western cultures meet. Russian and Asian traditions are reflected in the city's architecture, cuisine, and atmosphere.
History
Vladivostok was founded in 1860 by order of Nikolay Muravyov-Amursky, Governor-General of Eastern Siberia. The vessel Manchur entered Golden Horn Bay, and a detachment commanded by Nikolay Komarov landed on its shore. The city's name can be interpreted symbolically as "Rule the East".
Thanks to its convenient ice-free bay, Vladivostok became the region's principal port and the terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway. In the early twentieth century, the city experienced rapid economic growth as a free port. The free-port status introduced in 2015 continues this tradition, making Vladivostok one of the region's key trade and logistics centres.
Geographic Location
Vladivostok lies on the southern part of the Muravyov-Amursky Peninsula, approximately 9,000 km from Moscow by road. It stands on Golden Horn Bay on the Sea of Japan, close to China, Japan, and North Korea.
The city is part of Primorsky Krai and the Far Eastern Federal District and is Russia's largest city on the Pacific coast. It has hilly terrain and is surrounded by the waters of Amur Bay and Ussuri Bay.
Landmarks and Attractions
Eagle's Nest Hill, 199 metres above sea level, offers panoramic views across the city, including Svetlanskaya Street, the oldest and most visited street. At Korabelnaya Embankment, visitors can watch ships, some of which are open to the public.
Other notable attractions include Cape Tobizina on Russky Island, the lighthouse on Tokarevsky Spit, Golden Horn Bay, the Russky Bridge, and the unique Glass Bay, whose shore is covered with pieces of glass polished smooth by the sea.
