History
Founded in 1628, Krasnoyarsk is one of Siberia's oldest cities. Its name derives from the red-coloured, steep riverbank near the Kacha River where it was established.
Over time, it grew into a major centre of trade and industry, a role consolidated in the late nineteenth century by the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway, which cemented Krasnoyarsk's status as a key transport hub in Eastern Siberia.
Geographic Location
Krasnoyarsk is the administrative centre of Krasnoyarsk Krai and the Siberian Federal District. It lies in the centre of Russia, on both banks of the Yenisei River, approximately 3,950 km from Moscow.
The city stands at the meeting point of the West Siberian Plain, the Central Siberian Plateau, and the Sayan Mountains. As a result, its surroundings have far more varied terrain than those of most Siberian cities.
Landmarks and Attractions
Krasnoyarsk Pillars National Park, also known as Stolby, is the city's best-known natural landmark and one of its most popular hiking destinations. Not far away, the Chapel of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa on Karaulnaya Hill offers panoramic views of the city centre and the Yenisei River.
Tatyshev Island, linked to the city by a cable-stayed bridge, is a favourite spot for walking and cycling, while the Bobrovy Log Funpark draws visitors year-round, in both winter and summer.

The Yenisei never freezes near the city, thanks to the Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Power Station. Even in severe cold, dense clouds of steam rise above the open water in winter.
