About the City
Samara is a centre of engineering and space science. Its scientific achievements and rich mercantile heritage have given the city a distinctive character. A relaxed, unhurried atmosphere coexists with a vibrant cultural and festival scene, while the proximity of the Volga lends the city a summery spirit throughout the year.
History
Samara was founded in 1586 by decree of Tsar Feodor I. The fortified settlement of Samara was built on an elevated promontory on the right bank of the Volga, near its confluence with the Samara River.
Its favourable position at the intersection of trade routes transformed the small settlement into a major merchant city. During the Soviet period, when Samara was known as Kuibyshev from 1935 to 1990, it entered a new phase of development as government institutions and the diplomatic corps were relocated there.
Geographic Location
The city stands on the left bank of the Volga, between the mouths of the Samara and Sok Rivers, approximately 1,050 km from Moscow, in the Volga Federal District.
Samara is situated in the south-east of European Russia, opposite the Samarskaya Luka, the famous bend formed by the Volga as it flows around the Zhiguli Mountains.
Landmarks and Attractions
Samarskaya Luka National Park and the Zhiguli Mountains lie close to Samara. This natural wonder is one of the region's defining landmarks. The city also has one of Europe's longest riverfront promenades, extending for five kilometres along the Volga. Residents enjoy spending the summer on its beaches and watching the city's celebrated sunsets.
Samara is home to one of Russia's most unusual museums, the Samara Space Museum and Exhibition Centre, where a full-size, genuine launch vehicle is on display.

Samara is a global centre of the space industry. Soyuz launch vehicles are manufactured here and have completed more than 1,900 successful launches. It is the only Russian city with a complete cycle of spacecraft design, engineering, and assembly.

Samara has 60 museums, 21 theatres, a circus, a zoo, ten parks, and the Krylya Sovetov football club. In winter, visitors can enjoy the Krasnaya Glinka ski complex and the Chaika cross-country ski centre.
