About the City
Novosibirsk grew from a settlement established for railway-bridge workers into the region's largest cultural, scientific, and industrial centre. The city is known for Akademgorodok, one of Russia's leading research centres, around which a distinctive intellectual and university community has developed. The combination of large-scale industry, strong research traditions, and a vibrant cultural scene makes Novosibirsk one of Siberia's most important cities.
History
The city began in 1893 as a settlement for workers building a railway bridge across the Ob for the Trans-Siberian Railway. Its name changed several times—from Alexandrovsky to Novo-Nikolayevsky and, in 1926, to Novosibirsk.
It was granted city status as early as 1904 and became the administrative centre of the entire Siberian Krai in 1925. Akademgorodok, the research centre of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences, was founded in the south of the city in 1957.
Geographic Location
Novosibirsk lies on the West Siberian Plain, on both banks of the Ob River, 3,000 km east of Moscow. The city developed where the river intersects the Trans-Siberian Railway and remains the largest transport hub in the Siberian Federal District, of which it is the administrative centre.
The surrounding terrain is flat, part of the wider West Siberian Plain, though the city sits on the Priobsk Plateau bordering the Ob River valley.
Landmarks and Attractions
The Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre is the largest theatre in Russia. Its impressive scale and 60-metre-wide dome have earned it the nickname "the Siberian Coliseum".
The vast Novosibirsk Reservoir, known locally as the Ob Sea, features popular beaches for summer recreation. The city is also home to one of Russia's largest zoos, which specialises in rare feline species.

The city participates in the Safe City program, with video surveillance systems operating in streets and public spaces.
