About the City
Tomsk is the administrative centre of the Tomsk Region in the east of Western Siberia and one of Russia's oldest cities with a history spanning more than 400 years. It is a major cluster for advanced technology, industrial innovation, science, and culture. Tomsk ranks among the world's 100 best student cities and is third among the Russian cities included in the ranking, after Moscow and St Petersburg.
History
Tomsk was founded in 1604 by decree of Tsar Boris Godunov on the bank of the Tom River, following a request from a local prince. By the late nineteenth century, it had become the principal scientific and educational centre of Asian Russia. Imperial Tomsk University, the first university east of the Urals, opened there in 1888.
The city has since been known as the "Siberian Athens" because of its rich student and cultural life. Tomsk has numerous examples of eighteenth- to twentieth-century wooden and stone architecture and is surrounded by picturesque Siberian landscapes.
Geographic Location
Tomsk is situated in the east of Western Siberia, on the right bank of the Tom River, approximately 3,500 km from Moscow. The city lies at the edge of the taiga zone and is the administrative centre of the Tomsk Region.
Despite its remoteness from European Russia, Tomsk has historically served as a key base for the exploration and development of Siberia.
Landmarks and Attractions
Tomsk's greatest architectural treasure is its wooden architecture. Ornately decorated wooden houses dating from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have survived on Kuznetsova and Krasnoarmeyskaya Streets, including the famous House with Firebirds and the House with Dragons. Voskresenskaya Hill, where the city originated, now serves as a viewpoint overlooking the historic centre. Nearby lies the picturesque University Grove, home to the buildings of Tomsk State University and its botanical garden.
Lagerny Garden, on the Tom River embankment, is a favourite spot for locals to walk. Green tourism is also developing rapidly in the surrounding suburbs, with summer recreation and winter activity centres drawing both residents and visitors alike.
