About the City
Nizhny Novgorod is a historic commercial and cultural centre of the Volga region whose motto is "the city where you can feel life". For centuries, it was an important centre of trade and crafts. Today, it combines this historical role with a vibrant cultural and business environment. Its atmosphere is calmer and more intimate than that of a major metropolis, yet its calendar is no less eventful.
History
Nizhny Novgorod was founded in 1221 by Yury Vsevolodovich, Grand Prince of Vladimir, as an outpost at the confluence of the Volga and Oka Rivers. In 1611, residents of Nizhny Novgorod, led by the merchant Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, liberated Moscow from invaders. This episode made the city a symbol of national unity in difficult times.
In 1817, the country's largest trade fair was relocated to the city. It earned Nizhny Novgorod the nickname "the pocket of Russia", while St Petersburg was regarded as the country's “head” and Moscow as its “heart.”
During the Soviet period, the city was renamed Gorky in honour of the writer Maxim Gorky and became one of the country's principal industrial centres and home to the newly established GAZ automobile plant. The city's historical name was restored in 1990.
Geographic Location
Nizhny Novgorod lies 400 km east of Moscow, at the confluence of two of European Russia's major rivers, the Oka and the Volga. It is the administrative centre of the Volga Federal District and forms part of the popular Golden Ring of Russia tourist route.
The city stands on the elevated right bank, with panoramic views over the point where the Oka meets the Volga. This area is known as the Strelka, and the confluence loosely divides the city into separate parts.
Landmarks and Attractions
The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin is one of the city's principal landmarks. Visitors can walk the full circuit of its walls, a route more than two kilometres long, while its viewing platforms overlook the Strelka, where the Oka and Volga Rivers meet.
A modern park extends alongside the Strelka, with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Nizhny Novgorod Fair nearby. Many attractions can be enjoyed free of charge, including a walk along the Strelka and sunset views from the Lower Volga Embankment.
