FAQ
1
What does 'Subject' mean?
A Subject unites several fields of Master's studies (for the doctoral track - several fields of doctoral studies); it is a a set of degree programs, having the same fundamental theoretical basis.
2
What do I do if I win?
Winners and runners-up of the Master’s track should choose the Master’s study program, which is included in the Subject in which the participants were awarded a winner/runner-up status. Then, they should choose one or several Universities, where this study program is offered. The following step is to prepare and to upload in the Olympiad’s Personal account the list of the documents, required to apply for a quote (scholarship) via the Information system of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia. Winners of the Doctoral (PhD) track should prepare and send the documents, required to apply for a quote (scholarship) via the Information system of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia, directly to the University, where the scientific supervision was confirmed.
3
What language will I study in?
The universities offer study programs in Russian or English language, and their availability depends on the exact University. If the chosen program is available only in Russian language and you need to upgrade your level of Russian, you can start your studies with the preparatory department of the University with the secured spot in the study program in Russian language for the next academic year.
4
Will I have to pay a tuition fee?
Your tuition fees will be paid by the Government of the Russian Federation. You will be responsible for covering the travel and accommodation costs, insurance and personal expenses.
5
Can I enroll in any program I chose?
You will be enrolled in the specialization indicated in your registration form when submitting your documents for a quote (scholarship). Within this specialization you can choose any program available for foreign students and offered by the chosen university. Winners of the Doctoral (PhD) track will be enrolled in one of the Universities-organizers of the Olympiad, whose representative confirmed the scientific supervision.
6
Do you have bachelor degree scholarships?
No. The competition is only open to those who graduated from the University with at least a Bachelor's degree or completing a Bachelor degree program in the year of the Olympiad final for the Master's track and possessing a Master's or Specialist's degree for the doctoral track (analogous to Ph.D.) in the year of the Olympiad final.
7
Can I add/change tracks and/or subjects when the Olympiad has already started?
You can do it only during the first stage of the Olympiad, and only while you still haven’t submitted the portfolio. You should prepare a motivation letter for each Subject, in which you participate. If you need to change/upload additional documents in your portfolio, you have it withdraw it. You can proceed with the withdrawal only before the 30th of November.
8
I took part in the Olympiad last year. Why can’t I access my account on the Open Doors website?
Previous year’s accounts are only available for winners/runners-up of the previous Olympiad. All others should create a new account, and to submit personal information and portfolio.
9
Which documents will I need for the first stage?
Only motivation letter and education level proof are mandatory for Portfolio submission. Without providing them, you won’t be able to submit your portfolio and take part in the second stage losing the opportunity to become a winner/prize-winner and get a scholarship through Open Doors. The motivation letter must be typed (or “copy-pasted” from a document) into the corresponding form. Educational documents are uploaded to the corresponding fields. The main educational document is the confirmation of your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. If you haven’t yet received your degree or haven’t got it available for any other reason, you can upload your official final transcript, the last or current year academic transcript, a scan of your grade sheet or other documents confirming your level of education. In this case you’ll have to provide the confirmation of your degree later, when getting admitted in the university. All other documents in the Portfolio are optional. But their presence might boost the maximum score you’ll be able to get at the initial stage of the Olympiad.
10
What should be written in the motivational letter? Where can I find guidelines for writing it?
There is no any specific guide on how to write a motivation letter; it should contain the information about your scientific and career goals, professional achievements, reasons of the choice of the Olympiad’s Subject and motivation to study in Russia. The participants of Doctoral track are strongly advised to add the summarized thesis and plan of the prospective scientific research.
11
Can I participate in multiple subjects?
The number of the subjects for participation is not limited. For each subject you should complete the motivation letter. Take into consideration the second stage trials schedule, as multiple Subjects can be scheduled for the same day. In the Olympiad final, in case you became a winner/prize-winner in several subjects, you will have to choose just one, as well as only one study program at the University.
12
Are notarized translations of the documents obligatory?
It is not obligatory at the first stage (Portfolio submission), when the certified translations can be uploaded. Certified translation is the one which is done by the certified translator with the professional education in translation, or the organization with the legal authorization to provide translation services. However, if you become a winner or a prize-winner, you’ll have to notarize the translation in the Russian Embassy/Consulate or at any public notary’s office.
13
What do I do if I can’t submit my portfolio?
That’s most likely because you didn’t fill one or both required fields – the motivation letter and educational documents, or you did not take/succeed in the entrance test. If there is any other problem – contact us via email or the feedback form on the website. Your message must be accompanied with a screenshot or a video of your screen where we can clearly see your problem.
14
What are the criteria of portfolio scoring?
The criteria differ depending on the Subject. Maximum possible score for every achievement category is displayed in a participant’s personal account as the portfolio is being filled in.
15
Can I edit/update my portfolio after it has been submitted?
If you need to submit additional documents in your Portfolio or change it after it was submitted, you can withdraw it (this procedure will be available in your personal account in the Olympiad website). You can withdraw your Portfolio till November 30.
16
Is it required to submit documental proof of my Russian/English language skills?
There is no need to confirm your language skills with certificates or in any other way for participation in the Olympiad. However, if you upload the documents, which confirm your level of Russian/English language, it can boost your score for the Portfolio. When you choose the language at the registration stage, it’s the language of PARTICIPATION in the Olympiad, meaning the language of your account’s interface, mailouts and the language you’ll be taking your exams in. The language of STUDIES in Russia in one’s chosen master’s/doctoral program is selected by winners/prize-winners after the Olympiad is over. The study language doesn’t have to be the same as the language of participation.
